Welcome to Whanganui Collegiate School
Since 1854, our School has stood as one of New Zealand’s great educational communities. For more than 170 years, generations of young people have come through our gates to learn, grow, lead, compete, serve, perform, and form friendships that last well beyond their school years.
We are proud of our history. It gives us depth, identity, and a strong sense of purpose. Yet Whanganui Collegiate School has never been a school that simply looks back. Our story has endured because we have continued to adapt, while holding firmly to the values that matter.
So, who are we?
Whanganui Collegiate School is a co-educational, Anglican, boarding and day school for young people in Years 9 to 13. We are a live-in learning community where students are known, supported, challenged, and encouraged to give their best.
Boarding sits at the heart of our culture. It gives our School its rhythm, its energy, and its sense of connection. For our boarders, the House becomes a second home. For our day students, the House system offers the same strong sense of belonging, identity, and care. Together, our students live the full life of the School: academic, sporting, cultural, spiritual, and social.
What defines us?
We believe education should shape the whole person. Academic achievement matters. So does character. So does contribution. So does confidence. At Whanganui Collegiate School, students are encouraged to think deeply, work hard, take responsibility, and develop the habits that will carry them into life beyond school.
Our academic programme provides breadth, rigour, and choice. Students are prepared through strong junior foundations, Cambridge IGCSE, NCEA pathways, and future-focused learning that develops critical thinking, independence, and purpose. We want students to leave us with qualifications that open doors, and with the confidence to step through them.
Beyond the classroom, opportunity is everywhere. Sport has been part of the Whanganui Collegiate School story since our earliest days. Our students take part in traditional fixtures, team sports, individual pursuits, and high-performance pathways. They learn discipline, resilience, humility, and commitment.
The arts also hold a special place in our School. Music, drama, debating, choir, House Music, productions, and performance give students the chance to find their voice, build confidence, and contribute creatively to the life of the community.
Our Anglican character gives the School a moral and spiritual foundation. Chapel, service, reflection, and fellowship help students understand that life is about more than personal success. It is about compassion, courage, service, and living with purpose.
What matters most?
Belonging.
Young people flourish when they feel known. They grow when they are surrounded by adults who care enough to support them and challenge them. They thrive when they are part of something larger than themselves.
That is the strength of Whanganui Collegiate School. Our Houses, Chapel, classrooms, fields, stages, dining room, and shared traditions all work together to create a connected life. Students learn alongside one another. They celebrate together. They face setbacks together. They build independence, confidence, leadership, and friendships that become part of who they are.
Our values of Vitality, Compassion, and Courage are not simply words. They describe the kind of young people we seek to develop. Young people with energy and purpose. Young people who care for others. Young people who are prepared to do what is right, even when it is difficult.
Whanganui Collegiate is a school of history, but it is also a school of possibility. We honour the past by preparing young people for the future.
I warmly invite you to visit, meet our students and staff, and experience the distinctive spirit of this remarkable School.
