Tikanga Maori

Tikanga Maori

Throughout the course of the year, students of Whanganui Collegiate School are taught Tikanga Maori (Maori customs) through haka and waiata.

Whanganui Collegiate School students participate in haka (composed by the late Morvin Te Anatipa Simon) and stand strong continuing this tradition proudly for School occasions. The objectives behind this programme are to educate and integrate Tikanga Maori into the lives of our students, to increase knowledge and participation in School powhiri (welcome) so our students stand proud and confident in occasions that may be different to their own cultures.
The outcomes for our students will be a greater understanding on how culture shapes the way people think and behave, where they begin to appreciate the value of cultural diversity. They learn about the important role that indigenous languages and cultures play in New Zealand and throughout the world.
