Director of Cricket: Mr Tom Dryden

The School has a strong tradition in cricket and fields teams at all levels.

  • The 1st XI has a strong fixture calendar with some more than 100 years old. An impressive record at Gillette Cup Competition is testament to the strength and importance of the sport.
  • The 2nd XI plays in the local men’s Division 2 competition as well as Inter-School fixtures.
  • The Girls XI play a number of Inter-School matches, including St Matthew's Collegiate School and New Plymouth Girls' High School.
  • Our Year 9 and Year 10 teams enjoy a very competitive Inter-School fixture list playing against many of the lower North Island schools. These include Rathkeale College in the Wairarapa, Palmerston North Boys' High School in the Manawatu, Scots College in Wellington, and in Taranaki Francis Douglas Memorial College and New Plymouth Boys' High School.

The sport is well-supported by the WCS Cricket Supporters' Club that helps with the development and maintenance of our three turf cricket wickets, five turf practice wickets and other cricket facilities in our School. Students are encouraged to reach beyond the School and play in representative teams.

WCS Cricket Academy High Performance Programme

The aim of the Academy is to develop the natural talent, flair, technical skill, mental attitude and general cricket knowledge, as well as etiquette, of Academy Cricketers to prepare them for the rigorous demands of Provincial, State and eventually International cricket.

The high-performance programme, run by WCS Cricket Academy Head Coach, Tom Dryden, caters to individual needs. Guest coaches hold clinics and Academy students have individual programmes customised to meet their own needs and requirements. Sessions are during the students' free time or designated period, and will be separate to normal training times. The programme breaks at the end of Term 1 and recommences at the start of Term 3.

Students will have to have displayed significant cricket/athletic talent and commitment in their respective age groups. They will also need to have the following attributes:

  1.  A good academic record with a continued high work ethic throughout the year.
  2.  Integrity and a social responsibility to themselves, the Academy, House & School.
  3.  Diligence and commitment to School & academic work.
